Pickleball can be won through speed and agility or careful planning and strategy. Whether you are planning on entering a tournament or just looking to up your game against friends the next time you hit one of the courts at gyms in Brentwood, the right tips can help you improve how you play pickleball.
Master the Serve
Placing your serve is vital to a good start. You need to land it in the right service box while still giving yourself the advantage. The key to making a good serve is to make it hard for your opponents to return. You can target your opponents’ weaker side, often their backhand side, and hit your serve deep into the service box. This pushes your opponents back beyond the base line, making it harder to return the ball. The trick is not hitting your serve out of bounds.
Return Deep
Return serves should also go deep into your opponents’ side of the court. You want to hit the ball close to the baseline, especially if you are playing against opponents who like to drive the third shot, often called “bangers.” With a deep shot, it’s hard for them to return and gives you and your partner more time to react. Again, target the weakest opponent’s shakier side.
Stay Ready
When you are at the best gyms Antioch has to offer, you need to show up ready to do your best. If your gym has a pickleball court and you are playing, that means you have to be ready. You want to be ready to transition to the “no-man’s land.” Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, body compressed with your weight on the balls of your feet, and paddle facing 10 or 11 o’clock. Your paddle should be forward and the paddle head up. This gives you the best chance to react.
Keep the Ball Low
While difficult to do, keeping the pickleball low but over the net can help prevent your opponents from going on the offensive, denying them aggressive shots. Instead of a drive, they will have to do a drop shot. A low shot in the non-volley zone often results in a dink instead of a volley. You can do this by keeping your paddle angle closed to the sky, nearly parallel with the net, giving the ball less height.
Know When a Ball Is Out
One of the best skills for pickleball is knowing when to let out balls go. It’s a great skill against opponents that like to drive the ball. Duck and dodge instead of trying to make a hit. Let shoulder-height drives go, as it’s probably out. This is often the case when they drive from the non-volley zone line. Communicate with your teammate, too, letting them know when not to hit.
